At 5:05 p.m. EDT, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide opened the hatch to the Kibo Japanese Pressurized Module and officially opened the JPM for science. Before opening the hatch, Hoshide said, "This is a great moment for the Japanese. We would like to thank all the Japanese folks. It has been 20plus years to get this module up in space. We have a new 'hope' on space station. It's a beautiful module. It looks pretty empty because we don't have lots of racks inside. It looks empty, but it's filled with dreams. The Kibo module is open."
