As anticipated, NASA today released photos of the July 31 test of the abort recovery system for the new Orion crew space exploration vehicle. NASA tested the parachute safety system on an Orion mockup above the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona. The exercise proved unsuccessful when a test support parachute failed.
The failed parachute -- called a programmer chute -- deployed, but it did not inflate properly. Although only one parachute out of 18 failed, this specific failure caused the entire system to fail.
