There were two lightning bolts Sunday at Hofstra. And that was before the late-afternoon storm hit.
After a shaky Jets debut Saturday, Brett Favre put on a show in Sunday's morning session, delivering two vintage Favre passes that left everybody buzzing.
Throwing off his back foot, Favre flicked his wrist and unleashed a 40-yard strike to Jerricho Cotchery. The most impressive part of that play, Cotchery said, was how Favre pump-faked the safety out of position, hitting him down the right sideline even though he was only supposed to be a decoy on the play.
Later, Favre showed his home-run ball, going deep ... deep ... deep to Cotchery - a 75-yard completion that traveled 65 yards in the air. David Barrett's coverage wasn't bad, but Favre found a small window. The last Jets quarterback with that much arm strength was Vinny Testaverde, circa 2001.
"A great ball," Cotchery said. "He put it out there far enough and he put enough air under it to where I could just run and go get it."
Said Eric Mangini: "The ball comes out hard, fast, straight and long - and that's always good."
After years of the finesse-throwing Chad Pennington, the receivers are learning to adjust to Favre's fastballs. As a result, there have been more drops than usual.
"Obviously, it's a different ball than anyone I've played with," tight end Chris Baker. "I played with Vinny, and he had a pretty hard ball, but it's still different."
The Jets don't want Favre, 38, to get a sore arm, so they have him on an undisclosed pitch count. The Favre version of the Joba Rules? "We're definitely conscious of that," Mangini said.
CHAD SPEAKS: Pennington, in his first interview as a Dolphin, said he's looking forward to facing Favre and the Jets in Week 1. "I don't have revenge on my mind or anything like that," he said Saturday night. "I have one thing on my mind and that's victory, period." On signing with Miami, he said, "This is a place I needed to be and wanted to be." ... CB Justin Miller and TE Bubba Franks returned to practice. ... Rookie CB Dwight Lowery left the morning practice after aggravating a leg injury. ... Mangini, mocking the media's obsession with Favre, opened his daily news conference by revealing what Favre ate for breakfast: two hard-boiled eggs, orange juice, a garnish and hash browns.

were now the team to beat now that Matt Cassel will be throwing to him, and Moss said: "I think the New England Patriots have won this division over the last couple of years, so I think the New England Patriots are still the team to beat. We did have a big loss in Tom Brady, but we still have 10 other guys on the field to go out and make it happen."
