Smile You must of known it was coming... Brett Favre uncorks dazzling display during Jets training camp

    BY RICH CIMINI
    DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

    Sunday, August 10th 2008, 8:10 PM
There were two lightning bolts Sunday at Hofstra. And that was before the late-afternoon storm hit.

After a shaky Jets debut Saturday, Brett Favre put on a show in Sunday's morning session, delivering two vintage Favre passes that left everybody buzzing.

Throwing off his back foot, Favre flicked his wrist and unleashed a 40-yard strike to Jerricho Cotchery. The most impressive part of that play, Cotchery said, was how Favre pump-faked the safety out of position, hitting him down the right sideline even though he was only supposed to be a decoy on the play.

Later, Favre showed his home-run ball, going deep ... deep ... deep to Cotchery - a 75-yard completion that traveled 65 yards in the air. David Barrett's coverage wasn't bad, but Favre found a small window. The last Jets quarterback with that much arm strength was Vinny Testaverde, circa 2001.
"A great ball," Cotchery said. "He put it out there far enough and he put enough air under it to where I could just run and go get it."
Said Eric Mangini: "The ball comes out hard, fast, straight and long - and that's always good."

After years of the finesse-throwing Chad Pennington, the receivers are learning to adjust to Favre's fastballs. As a result, there have been more drops than usual.
"Obviously, it's a different ball than anyone I've played with," tight end Chris Baker. "I played with Vinny, and he had a pretty hard ball, but it's still different."

The Jets don't want Favre, 38, to get a sore arm, so they have him on an undisclosed pitch count. The Favre version of the Joba Rules? "We're definitely conscious of that," Mangini said.

CHAD SPEAKS: Pennington, in his first interview as a Dolphin, said he's looking forward to facing Favre and the Jets in Week 1. "I don't have revenge on my mind or anything like that," he said Saturday night. "I have one thing on my mind and that's victory, period." On signing with Miami, he said, "This is a place I needed to be and wanted to be." ... CB Justin Miller and TE Bubba Franks returned to practice. ... Rookie CB Dwight Lowery left the morning practice after aggravating a leg injury. ... Mangini, mocking the media's obsession with Favre, opened his daily news conference by revealing what Favre ate for breakfast: two hard-boiled eggs, orange juice, a garnish and hash browns.

TIME FOR JETS TO PROVE THEY ARE TEAM TO BEAT

PROVE IT! Coach Bill Belichick and the Pats will have to beat Brett Favre (above) and the Jets without QB Tom Brady.

    Posted: 3:27 am
    September 11, 2008
RANDY Moss was asked if the New York Jets were now the team to beat now that Matt Cassel will be throwing to him, and Moss said: "I think the New England Patriots have won this division over the last couple of years, so I think the New England Patriots are still the team to beat. We did have a big loss in Tom Brady, but we still have 10 other guys on the field to go out and make it happen."
Now if I'm Eric Mangini, I am circulating that quote in the team meeting this morning, and plastering it all over every available bulletin board at the Jets' spanking new facility in Florham Park, N.J. Because this is, for all intents and purposes, what it should mean to all of them:
They've lost Tom Brady and they still think they can beat us?
    With Matt Cassel?
What does that say about us?
They asked Brett Favre the same question at his press conference about an hour earlier and he said: "I think the Patriots are still the team to beat until proven otherwise. We're not the team to beat; this team was 4-12 last year. The Patriots have dominated this division, as well as this league, for a long time. One game doesn't make us the team to beat. I think any time you're not facing Tom Brady it gives you a better chance."
Favre has been around the block long enough to know it is always advisable to let a sleeping dog lie. Besides, the guy has played exactly one game with his new team in his new town, and his 38-year-old head is still swimming in an ocean of new terminology. This is hardly the time to go Namath on the AFC East. And hey, "talk is cheap play the game" sure worked for Tom Coughlin and the GiantsNew York Giants last year, didn't it?
The Jets are the team to beat because they suddenly have an overwhelming advantage over the Patriots - and over the Bills - at the single most important position on the field.
Whether he likes it or not, the expectations, already lofty the second he arrived at City Hall, have made a Lambeau Leap, to the Super Bowl heavens, for Favre.
This isn't Favre versus Brady anymore: It's Favre versus Favre, and Favre versus Bill Belichick.
    Thanks,

On the other hand, this week was a different animal.

Historic Performance: Jets Cut Cards, 56-35

In need of a win, the Jets went out and made history.

Brett Favre threw a career-high six touchdown passes — equaling Joe Namath's 1972 franchise record — the defense forced seven turnovers — six by QB Kurt Warner — and the Jets rolled to a 34-0 second quarter en route to crushing the Arizona Cardinals, 56-35, at the Meadowlands today.
"I'm proud of this team and the way we battled today, especially after last week," Favre said. "We knew the offense could score a lot of points. I think it shows the potential of what this team has. It's just one game, but it's a great start."

After a scoreless opening 15 minutes, the Jets, wearing their blue and gold Titans throwbacks, went wild in a second stanza that would have made old AFL players proud. And whenever they needed a shot of momentum, they rode the golden right arm of the Mississippi gunslinger while the

At the season’s quarter mark, the Jets moved to 2-2 and the Cards dropped to .500. It was a dynamite display in front of the home faithful and the previously 2-1 Cards could never fully recover from flurry after magnificent flurry.
The Jets forced Warner's offense into five first-half turnovers (two interceptions and three fumbles), Favre connected with Laveranues Coles on three touchdowns in the second stanza and NT Kris Jenkins even blocked a field goal.

This one was almost tucked away at the half as the giddy Jets jogged into intermission with the second-largest halftime margin in franchise history. The home loyalists, enthralled by what they had just seen, rose to their feet in unison and gave their team a tremendous ovation at the break.

“The plan was to get to pressure on him," said DE Shaun Ellis, who was credited with one sack. "We know if we got to him, he’d give us some plays and he did just that."
The Jets scored a pair of quick-strike touchdowns to take their first 14-point lead of the season. Capitalizing on a short field, Favre threw a ridiculous rope to LC in the back of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown. Coles, who worked his way from the left to the middle, found a little room and Favre delivered like few others in NFL history could.

Then the defense, brilliant in the first half, decided to take care of business on their own. They confused Warner with a one-man rush and the veteran blinked, throwing an ill-advised ball in the direction of TE Ben Patrick. Corner Darrelle
the turf, Coles sprinted free up the left sideline and Favre hit him for a 34-yard score.
“They made a conscious effort this week to try to get me the ball and get me in the game early,” Coles said. “I’m appreciative of that and I’m thankful I was able to make some plays.”

Coles, who also handed a ball to a fan after his first score, kept this one for himself and celebrated with a nifty dance. It took just 7:27 on the gameclock for the Jets to score three touchdowns and grab a 21-0 lead.
And as light sneaked into the stadium and clouds broke momentarily, the Jets kept a black cloud above their opponent. Kris Jenkins, in action despite a back injury, pushed C Lyle Sendlein back into Warner and the jolted passer threw his second interception of the half to S Eric
“I’m just excited about having the opportunity to play football with a legend," LC said. "I say that all the time, but there’s nothing I can do to enhance his career and there’s a lot he can do to enhance mine with everything he brings to the table.”

For a moment, it appeared the Jets were done scoring. But with just seconds left in the half, David Bowens not only sacked Warner but the veteran outside linebacker recovered at the Cards’ 12 and just two seconds on the game clock. Feely tacked on another field goal, completing the 34-point stampede.
Despite a gigantic deficit, Warner and the Cards wouldn’t fold. They displayed grit right out of the break, scoring 21 points in the third stanza, but the 38-year-old Favre made sure the lead would stand up.

“We had a lot of takeaways,” Revis said. “The defensive line got to the quarterback well today and we made a couple plays in the secondary. It’s falling together. We just have to keep on pushing.”
The Jets owned this day and now head into the bye week at 2-2.
“We didn’t have to win, but if we didn’t we’d be in trouble — we’d be in a hole," S Kerry Rhodes said. "We had to come out and get it done, and we were able to get it done.”

    Desert Dominance
The Jets have never lost to the Arizona Cardinals and now own a 4-0 record against the NFL club. They lead the overall series with the ‘Cards, who formerly called home in St. Louis, record in Titans garb.

Favre in Oakland: Reaching a Peak at a Low Point

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — On Monday night, Dec. 22, 2003, the stands in Oakland were filled with the usual characters dressed in costumes, wearing black, jeering the opponent of their beloved Raiders.
Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image
    Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images
Almost five years ago, the day after his father died, Brett Favre threw four touchdown passes in the first half against the Raiders.

Brett Favre ran out of the tunnel prepared for the worst. His father, Irvin, had died the day before, after having a heart attack while driving near their hometown in Mississippi. He was 58.

Favre’s teammates on the Green Bay Packers ran beside him, and when they reached the field, the rowdy folks who make up the Black Hole stood and actually showered an opposing quarterback with applause. Everywhere he looked, Favre saw signs offering condolences, giving the most infamous stadium in the N.F.L. the appearance of a giant Hallmark card.
When Favre thinks back to that evening — at once among the best games and the worst days of his life — he remembers the reception from the fans more than that on the field. He remembers the postgame police escort that never stopped en route to the plane he had chartered to return home for his father’s funeral.
“I didn’t expect that type of ovation,” Favre said last week as he prepared for his first return to Oakland since that night, this time with the Jets.
Of all the performances that make up the legend of Brett Favre, that game, one of the most memorable of the last decade, stands at or near the top.
The Packers arrived in Oakland that weekend needing to beat the Raiders to stay in the playoff hunt, and needing another team in front of them to lose.
Favre went golfing with two teammates on Sunday afternoon. When they finished the round, his wife, Deanna, called his backup, Doug Pederson. The news hit Favre like a defensive end with a free shot at the quarterback.
Back at the team hotel, Favre considered ending his record consecutive-start streak of 204 games, which began more than 10 years earlier. Then he thought about his teammates. They were so close to the playoffs, a goal they had been working toward since training camp.
Then he thought about his father, a man everyone back home affectionately called Big Irv, a man who would have wanted his son to play, regardless of the circumstances.
Favre consulted with his wife, his coach, his teammates and, eventually, with his gut. At a team meeting Sunday night, he told the Packers he was going to play.
Tight end Bubba Franks was on that team; he and Favre came to the Jets this off-season. He says he remembers that meeting as clearly as the game itself. All these years later, he can feel the emotions.
“It’s one thing coming from just another guy,” Franks said. “But it’s another thing coming from Brett.”
Favre said he thought Deanna would stay home with their daughters, but she arrived at the team hotel early Monday morning. Her presence gave Favre some comfort, but there was still a game to win and a loss to mourn.
By Monday afternoon, Favre wondered if he had made a mistake in deciding to forge ahead. In warm-ups, he had forgotten what coverage the Packers expected from the Raiders, along with his audibles and most of the rest of his preparation.
His pregame passes flew everywhere but at his intended target, the backup Pederson, who stood all of 10 yards away.
Favre said he believed that once the game started, he would be fine.
“But I was more than fine,” he said.
Much more. Favre passed for 311 yards and 4 touchdowns in the first half alone. He threw long scoring strikes, darts into double coverage, wobbly passes that somehow found their intended targets. Everything worked.
The Packers won the game, 41-7, improving to 9-6 and tying Minnesota for first place in the National Football Conference North.
“I’ve never seen a first half like that,” Favre told reporters afterward. “I knew that my dad would have wanted me to play. I love him so much, and I love this game.”
Franks said the Packers struggled in warm-ups. Some players were overwhelmed and tried too hard. Others looked like zombies.
They took their cues from Favre, who went from shaky to steady to spectacular in less than an hour.
“It was just one of those moments,” Franks said. “I won’t ever forget it. For a guy to come out and put that kind of performance on, after that situation happened, you can’t write something like that. He responded in a way only he knows how.”
Most of Favre’s current teammates said they watched that game on television, along with football fans everywhere. Safety Kerry Rhodes said he remembered Favre’s exact statistics from that game. Right tackle Damien Woody said he remembered the way Favre’s teammates rallied around him.
“It says a lot about his character and what the game of football means to him,” Woody said. “To be able to put on a performance like that, it is special. If we can get a repeat, I’ll be more than satisfied.”
Favre returns to that stadium on Sunday in an entirely different situation. Nearly five years have passed, so Favre said he doubted that memories would overwhelm in his return.
“It’s just another game — one that we need to win,” he said. “Obviously, I’m with a different team, but in some ways, the circumstances are the same. We need to win this game.”
As for the reception from the Raiders’ faithful? Favre can only dream.
“If they’re watching, I hope it’s a standing ovation,” he said, smiling wide. “But we’ll see.”
    Thanks,

Jets Introduce Sanchez, Grab Greene In Third Round

    NEW YORK (CBS) ―

Mark Sanchez's first pass with the New York Jets was right on target.
The fifth overall pick in the NFL draft clutched his new No. 6 green and white jersey at his introductory news conference Sunday and softly tossed it over two rows of seats, right into the hands of his father.

Over the linebacker," a beaming Nick Sanchez said, "and into the seam."

The Jets are hoping for a whole lot of that on the field for years to come after trading up 12 spots Saturday to select their new face of the franchise.

"It's very rare that you find a team that you like so much and you end up getting drafted by them," Mark Sanchez said. "You usually end up getting heartbroken on draft day."

Sanchez, decked out in a black pinstriped suit, dark green tie and white Jets cap, caught a flight from his home in Mission Viejo, Calif., shortly before midnight and landed in the New York area early Sunday morning. He then went on a head-spinning media tour, including a stop at the draft site at Radio City Music Hall, along with his family and agent David Dunn.

"This is so cool," said a smiling Sanchez as the cameras flashed while he held up his jersey -- punter Reggie Hodges worked out a side agreement for the No. 6.

"There's a lot of work ahead," the former Southern California star said. "This isn't an end point. Getting here isn't it. It's about winning games and playoff games and getting into championship games."

The Jets acquired the pick from Cleveland and former coach Eric Mangini for their first- and second-round picks, along with defensive end Kenyon Coleman, safety Abram Elam and quarterback Brett Ratliff. New York was at it again Sunday when it traded a third-, fourth- and seventh-rounder to Detroit for the first spot in the third round to select Iowa running back Shonn Greene.

"We felt so good about those two players that we had to pay the price to go up there and get them," offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said.

With their last pick, the Jets selected Nebraska guard Matt Slauson, a three-time All-Big 12 selection, in the sixth round.

Sanchez, with his accurate arm and excellent field vision, will compete for the starting job with Kellen Clemens. The two share the same agent, and Sanchez called Clemens after he was taken by the Jets.

"He said, 'You know, man, we're going to have fun together,"' Sanchez recalled. "We had a good talk."

Dunn said he didn't anticipate a long negotiation process, and the quarterback was eager to get a deal done quickly.

"In this process, I already feel I'm in the hunt," he said. "I need to get in this place right now. I need as many reps as possible."

Sanchez went 14-2 as a starter with the Trojans, leading them over Penn State in the Rose Bowl in January. His lack of experience -- he had only one full season as a starter -- had many questioning whether he was truly ready for the NFL. The Jets didn't, especially after putting him through a private workout and holding a classroom session in a hotel room at the owners' meetings in California in March.

"He really is advanced for a guy who had 16 starts," Schottenheimer said.

Sanchez also addressed an incident three years ago in which he was arrested after a female USC student accused him of sexual assault. No charges were filed, and Sanchez said it helped prepare him for playing in a place where his every move is scrutinized.

"It was simply false allegations, but in that kind of situation, you're in a huge media spotlight just like here with the Jets," he said. "People know where you go, where you go to eat, who you are dating and things like that. To be in a situation like that, it taught me so much."

Greene, from Sicklerville, N.J., set Iowa single-season records last year with 1,850 yards and 20 touchdowns after sitting out the previous year when he was ruled academically ineligible. Powerfully built at 5-foot-11 and 227 pounds, he could provide a nice complement to the bulldozing Thomas Jones and speedy Leon Washington.

"I think I can do a lot of things, but mostly, I'm good between the tackles and I'm going to get those tough yards and just move the chains," Greene said.

Greene, who found out the Jets drafted him while he was in the shower, was a backup his first two seasons at Iowa. After leaving the school, he worked at a furniture store in Iowa and improved his grades at Kirkwood Community College before he rejoined the Hawkeyes. He then had to beat out five others to win the starting tailback job.

"I just think that situation just really helped me out and it's the reason I'm here today," Greene said. "It's crazy to think about where I was last year to now."

Greene ran into Sanchez when he arrived at the Jets' training facility and the two hugged, congratulated each other and then exchanged phone numbers.
"Good guy," Greene said. "He's going to do good here."

The Jets went 9-7 in the 2008 regular season.
